Rat GUI is the most convenient simulation tool for magnet engineers — model a magnet in 3D and calculate its electric and magnetic properties, all in one package.
No obligation to buy. Windows, macOS & Linux.
Project Rat is a complete software package that includes everything from modelling a magnet in three dimensions to calculating its electric and magnetic properties in 3D.
Rat is written in object-oriented C++ with, at its core, the Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM) — making it one of the fastest 3D tools for magnetostatic calculations available. Not a programmer? No problem: get started with the Rat Graphical User Interface and a thirty-day free trial with no obligation to buy.
The MLFMM core delivers state-of-the-art speed for 3D magnetostatic calculations, with optional GPU acceleration.
Build coils and magnets in 3D and post-process fields, forces, meshes and tracks — without leaving the application.
The GUI wraps the open-source Rat Library so you can get to work straight away, with no prior knowledge of C++ or Linux.
Companies and institutions that want to use Rat GUI can purchase a license from Little Beast Software B.V. by contacting us via our e-mail address. Unless requested otherwise, you will first get access to our thirty-day trial. We will send all the details for downloading and installing Rat GUI in a reply to your e-mail. The use of Rat GUI is subject to our General Terms and Conditions and Individual Use Terms — by downloading, installing and/or using Rat GUI, you agree to these terms.
Rat GUI uses a floating license key model: a single key may be installed on multiple devices and used by multiple users, but only one instance can be active at any time.
EUR 2’950 / year / license
Excluding all applicable VAT, sales or withholding taxes.
The thirty-day trial can be converted to a yearly subscription after receipt of payment. There is no obligation to buy.
Please make sure to not miss our e-mail — add our e-mail address to your address book so that we don’t end up in your spam folder.

Our customer support can be reached via our customer support e-mail address. We will do our best to respond as soon as possible, but no later than three business days after receiving your e-mail. Support includes help with installing the software, getting started, and fixing Rat GUI software bugs free of charge.
To get started we provide tutorials and a manual. If you still have questions, visit the FAQ or send us an e-mail.
Operating hours for customer support are 09:00–17:00 (CET) on business days, excluding Dutch public holidays and weekends.
Customization, configuration, training or other services fall outside standard support, but can be requested in a separate statement of work on a time-and-materials basis in accordance with Little Beast Software's standard rate card.
Project Rat is a collection of C++ software tools specially designed for magnet engineers. It was created to help magnet engineers model magnets and calculate their electromagnetostatic properties efficiently thanks to the Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method. The heart of Project Rat is the Rat Library, which is completely open source and free of charge, always and for everyone.
The other part of Project Rat is the Rat Graphical User Interface (GUI). The Rat GUI is not open source and was made to provide convenience to users who would like to get started straight away without any prior knowledge of C++ or Linux.
All information on software licensing for Project Rat can be found here.
The Rat GUI is a graphical interface around the Rat Library and is part of Project Rat. It is closed-source software and can be purchased from Little Beast Software B.V. by contacting us via e-mail.
The Rat GUI can be requested via e-mail at info@rat-gui.com. We will reply to your e-mail with instructions on where to download the Rat GUI and how to install it. The use of Rat GUI is subject to our General Terms and Conditions and Individual Use Terms; by downloading, installing and/or using Rat GUI, you agree to these terms.
The Rat GUI costs EUR 2’950 per year per license, excluding all applicable VAT, sales or withholding taxes. Rat GUI uses a floating license model.
We currently support Windows 10 or higher, macOS, and a variety of Linux distributions. Please contact us for information on where to download the Rat GUI.
Rat GUI is actively tested across various platforms and hardware. You do not need the latest hardware to run it effectively. The table below summarises minimum and recommended specifications for CPU-only usage; the last column adds recommendations if you enable optional GPU acceleration.
| Hardware | Minimum | Recommended | GPU acceleration |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor (Windows/Linux), or Apple Silicon (macOS)* | ||
| CPU cores | Four | Six | Six |
| RAM** | 8 GB | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | Any GPU | Any GPU | NVIDIA, compute compatibility > 6.1 |
| GPU memory** | 2 GB | 4 GB | 8 GB |
*Rat GUI uses OpenBLAS for linear algebra, suitable for Intel and AMD processors as well as Apple Silicon.
**Memory depends on model size. The recommended memory works for most applications; extremely large models may need more. Not sure your hardware is compatible? Contact us to request a free thirty-day trial and test it on your system.
Depending on the GPU used, GPU acceleration can speed up calculations by 5 to 10 times.
A manual and video tutorials on how to use the Rat GUI can be found here.
You will receive an e-mail once we have released a new version of the Rat GUI. We also post new releases on our news page.
Did you not receive our e-mail while you still have a valid yearly subscription? Please contact us.
We can't guarantee the Rat GUI will be free of bugs, even though we test extensively before every release. Please e-mail bug reports to info@rat-gui.com. We aim to reply within three business days (business hours 09:00–17:00 CET, excluding public holidays and weekends).
In general we do not implement feature requests directly, but we may use them for future upgrades. Customization, configuration, training or other services fall outside standard support, but can be requested in a separate statement of work on a time-and-materials basis in accordance with Little Beast Software's standard rate card.
The Rat Library is a collection of open-source C++ libraries that let you model magnets and coils and calculate their electro- and magnetostatic properties.
The Raccoon software is currently not for sale. We use Raccoon for our consultancy business, and we are working hard on implementing transient calculations for Rat as well. If you are interested in our help with transient 3D electromagnetic and thermal network simulations, please contact Little Beast Engineering.
